Moderation is Key

Author: admin

Let’s face the fact that we cannot enjoy the delightful luxury of consuming cakes, pies, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and breads everyday and hold on to our slim and trimmed bodies. There is one exception and it is to the one who has mastered portion control. Unfortunately, though, most of us have not, and therefore, I would suggest you start weaning yourself away from your Thanksgiving delights. Perhaps it is time to get yourself back into a discipled mode. Why? Because Christmas is coming. During Christmas break, you’ll want to have tasty calorie packed treats without feeling guilty and looking too dumpy. Not to mention your heart health, which we have spoken of in previous articles. So, let’s apply moderation in all things. To eat or drink in excess is not good for the body or for the soul…Moderation in all things….

What is Self Talk?

Author: admin

Self talk refers to the dialogue that goes on inside your head when faced with conflict or life challenges or even simple day-to-day concerns.

Self talk is mental talking: the things that an individual says to himself or herself mentally. Self talk also takes the form of pictures and concepts.

Self talk is a running commentary about everything you do. It never lets anything go by with out some comment, remark or evaluation.

Self talk is a stream of thoughts you think within yourself on a daily basis.

Self talk refers to patterns of negative or positive inner thoughts. Awareness of self-talk often start in childhood, however, the emotions of self talk begin in the mother’s womb. Usually, the self-talk habit is one that has colored our thinking for years, and can affect us in many ways. Any time can be a good time to change it! Here are steps you can follow to stop yourself from using negative self-talk.

Pr. 23:7 reads, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he”. Your thoughts equal your reality. In Mt. 9:21 a woman with an issue of blood said within herself…”if I may but touch the hem of his garment, I shall be whole”. Out of everyone present that day, who also touched Jesus, this sick woman was healed after over a decade of being so sick that her doctor’s could do nothing else for her.

Step #1 – Take note of your negative self talk, by writing it down
Step #2 – Disagree with it.
Step #3 – Replace it with scripturally positive self talk.

Expect to see yourself as a higher achiever in life, simply because of positive self talk.

A Picture of HealthYour physical body is important. God is interested in the health of your body. You can’t live one day beyond the expiration of your own health, no, not even to bring transformation to someone else. Jesus’ actions prove that God is interested in health. “…they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils: and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick…” (Matthew 8:16-17). Many people receive healing, but still struggle with symptoms of the disease they’re being healed from. That’s because healing can be gradual, it involves a process. On the other hand, a miracle happens instantly. With this understanding you are not deceived. You won’t think “Jesus hasn’t healed me”. Quite the contrary, yes, he has!

In the meantime if you have been diagnosed with a sickness, follow your Doctor‘s instructions. You’ll be glad to know that medication does not stop the healing process nor prolong it. Make it your business to eat right, exercise moderately and take care of yourself. You need your body.

Here is a simple list of the very best, proven natural foods & drinks for optimum brain (and body) health.

Wild salmon is not only an incredible food for brain health, it qualifies as incredible across virtually every other health standard as well and is clearly one of the healthiest foods that one can eat. Period. Wild salmon is one of the best sources of Essential Fatty Acids (such as the all-important Omega-3), a rich source of high-quality non-land animal protein, low saturated fat, generally among the lowest amounts of contaminants (such as mercury) among seafood, and other health properties — wild salmon can help do everything from improve your brain matter, your mood, your synaptic connections, your arteries, reduce your risk of stroke and Dementia and Alzheimer’s and much more.

It’s also important to know that only WILD salmon has been shown to contain the highest levels of the good stuff that your brain & body crave…as wild-caught fish grow and evolve their muscles, tissues and fat levels the hard way, fighting for survival of the fittest in the oceans and rivers.

While there ARE some good sustainable, eco-friendly, health-focused farmed salmon operations out there, It’s just as good, if not better to take your salmon fresh and wild and naturally orange in color. Your brain and body are worth it.

2) Cacao Beans.
Wait, you mean chocolate, right? Hurray! I’ve been looking for an excuse to hit that vending machine and grab a candy bar…it has chocolate in it, so now it’s actually healthy, right?

WRONG. Well, mostly wrong: what’s healthy is the cacao bean, minimally processed. This amazing, hedonistic bean is one of the world’s longest-revered foods (think ‘time of the Aztecs’ old) and has in recent years been shown to be a veritable powerhouse of cognitive enhancement, mood and bliss-enhancement (thanks in part to the Theobromine in cacao), antioxidants, flavonoids, catechins and many other brain & body-enhancing elements. In fact, chocolate has been very recently cited by some top health professionals and researchers to be THE single most exciting health food.

How is this possible, something that only recently was thought of as an unhealthy, dangerous, guilty indulgence…a sign of dietary decadence, now being hailed as beneficial to everything from brain health to skin elasticity to cardiovascular health to anti-cancer and pretty much everything in between? It’s simple: chocolate does not equal cacao bean, nor vice-versa; most candy and chocolate bars contain not only low levels of cacao bean compared to other unhealthy ingredients such as sugars, milk fat, artificial flavorings and so on, but the quality and processing of the cacao used in these products is often of low health benefits due to everything from alkalization (e.g. “Dutch process cocoa”) to refining and processing and over-roasting the healthy elements right out of the beans.

So if you want the real stuff, the best bet is to either use 100% organic non-alkalized cocoa powder from a high-quality maker who minimally processes the cocoa to ensure that the health properties are retained, or, second best, choose only high cacao percentage dark chocolate bars (typically at least 75% cacao content or higher, but we suggest 85% or higher), also from a high-quality provider.

Here at BrainReady, we’ve found it easiest to just mix a large spoonful of 100% organic cocoa powder with a bit of espresso, organic unsweetened soy milk and some cinnamon, even a sprinkle of cayenne red pepper…yes, cayenne pepper!) in the morning (and sometimes again in the afternoon) to make a drink not unlike what the ancient Aztecs used to make: it’s one tasty, brain & body-fueling drink that gives you your pure cacao bean dose without the sugars and milk fat, you get your protein from the soy milk, brain-enhancing (and blood sugar-stabilizing) cinnamon, a little brain-enhancing caffeine from the espresso and theobromine (plus more) from the chocolate, and a digestion, brain-enhancing and respiratory-enhancing kick from the cayenne pepper.

In summary, yes: chocolate is a brain health food. Or more specifically, the cacao bean is a true brain health and body health food. And worth considering adding to your diet (barring any allergies to chocolate or contraindications, of course).

3) Matcha (stone-ground Gyokuru green tea powder)

4) Acai berries & Blueberries (tie)

Acai berries possess not only all of the antioxidant, vitamin and brain benefits of other purple berries such as blueberries and blackberries but also (oddly, for a berry) contains Essential Fatty Acids like Omega-3′s like salmon, and and is even high in protein.

Sounds like a a true superfood, right? It is. With proven ORAC antioxidant levels higher than any other berry ever tested, Acai’s unique combination of health properties make it a true superfood for brain and body. Of course, we’re talking about fresh Acai berries here…not some local generic health food shop pills claiming to contain Acai. And that’s where the challenge can come in (hence our research and report on the best Acai products that we published recently), as Acai needs to be quickly processed (flash-freeze dried, flash-frozen, etc.) and maintained and processed if you’re to get the full benefits of this berry outside of South America

Then there’s blueberries: it didn’t seem fair to leave this time-honored, well-researched superfood off the list, particularly given its reputation as the ‘brain berry’ and its wide availability in fresh, original form (compared to Acai). And given how relatively easy it is to add blueberries to your daily diet, the combination of proven health benefits with ready availability make it a no-brainer to consider eating blueberries daily if possible. Think about it: what would your brain health, brain abilities, disease/risk profile, and overall health be like 5 or 10 or 20 years from now if you consumed blueberries every day?

5) Coffee beans

Ah, coffee. So popular, so ubiquitous, yet still so surprisingly misunderstood when it comes to “healthy or not”. How can this be?

You’d think that virtually everyone would be an expert on coffee these days, given the explosion of coffee chains like Starbucks over the last decade. Perhaps it’s because the situation is much like chocolate: the coffee bean, much like the cacao bean, is incredibly rich with antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Fresh-ground gently roasted coffee bean powder (again, like with cacao) has numerous brain and body health benefits…yes, including the caffeine content which has recently been shown to be GOOD for the brain, not bad, and particularly in the area of antioxidants. Regular coffee consumption has been shown to actually reduce the risk of mental decline and diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s, and has also recently been found to be (shockingly) the “#1 source of antioxidants in the average American diet”…showing at once how health food-deprived the average diet continues to be while illustrating the surprising health benefits of something as common as coffee.

So where’s the controversy and confusion? The problem comes in when coffee is combined with other unhealthy things, as is so commonly done. For many people, coffee is still viewed as a ‘vice’, something bad for you, something ‘naughty’ that should be avoided…as if it were akin to smoking cigarettes or other addictive habits. The origin of this bizarre thinking comes partially from the effects of the caffeine (and other elements) which contribute to the stimulating effects of drinking coffee, and yes, for some people, coffee is not promoted as healthy for you due to sensitivity to caffeine or gastrointestinal effects that coffee can sometimes produce.

But generally speaking, the coffee bean is a safe, true superfood. And when properly consumed in ideal forms (such as pure Espresso), it’s one uniquely enjoyable beverage that also packs a host of brain and health-friendly properties.

So there you have it: a list of 5 brain health (and overall healthy) foods to consider adding to your diet (barring any allergies or contraindications) if you’re interested in optimum brain health, overall health and longevity, and optimal aging.

It’s important to note however that none of these foods nor any other food, drink, supplement or drug is a “wonder drug” that will produce immediate results. There’s no magic cure or wonder drug or superfoo that one should consume at the expense of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle, nor should you have unrealistic expectations around what any one of food can do for you. Rather, the foods cited here (like other healthy foods) are foods which have been shown to be particularly, often uniquely, beneficial when consumed consistently in moderation over time along with the rest of a healthy lifestyle and practices.

Nonetheless, these 5 foods are a great way to get started if you’re interested in keeping your brain and body healthy as you age, and yes…one or more of them just might make that critical difference in your current and future health. So why not tip the scale in your favor, and feel great while doing it?

It is Good to Trust

Author: admin

IMG_0058Trust is defined as – reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence. In a world where people are struggling to trust, it is important for you to trust in the Lord. Society struggles to trust government officials, police officers, priests, the list can go on and on. This is partly because of the sins of the past.

Jesus was a man without sin, who took on your sin and mine so that we could be redeemed from sin. He was approved by God through signs wonders and miracles. He is the most loyal, loving, dependable friend and the savior of the world. Let’s make sure we don’t put God in the same category that we’ve put government officials, police officers or even priests. He is not sinful man, He is God.

It is good to trust. In fact, the word trust is listed in Holy Bible approximately 134 times. Below you will find some of my favorite trust quotes.

God is God. Because He is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will, a will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what He is up to.

Elisabeth Elliot

God has wisely kept us in the dark concerning future events and reserved for himself the knowledge of them, that he may train us up in a dependence upon himself and a continued readiness for every event.

Matthew Henry

A person who wholly follows the Lord is one who believes that the promises of God are trustworthy, that He is with His people, and that they are well able to overcome.

Watchman Nee

It is good to trust. The bible exhorts us by saying, ” Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Prov. 3:5&6)

When one finds himself in trouble, he usually focuses on the problem in order to get free of it or resolve it in some way. Resolving problems takes a lot of extra focus. However, I would like to challenge you to change your your method of dealing with the challenges that come with life. Instead of focussing on the problem focus on the Lord. Trust him to help you out of your troubles. That’s exactly what King David did. Ps. 25:15 reveals that when David needed help during a troublesome time in his life he said, ” Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.”

It is good to trust.

This is the time of year when people tend to put their diets aside and forget all about which foods digest well vs. those that do not. People tend to think that on a holiday all rules get put on hold and “you just go for it!”. Quite the contrary. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday season more than any other time, you should remember your food eating rules that have worked for you all year long. Do not make an exception, not even for Thanksgiving.

Do not eat a little bit of everything – All foods don’t mix well once they have entered the stomach, so, be very selective with the foods you put together.

Do not eat from a large plate or platter – It is much better for you to go for a second helping from a smaller plate than to gorge yourself by insisting on seconds after eating from a huge plate.

Always drink some water before you eat . This way you are not over eating from dehydration. It’s always good to sip on water throughout the day.

Avoid foods that cause an adverse reaction in your body such as a headache, diarrhea and bloating.

Desserts are not a must. Instead of dessert, try a cup of Ginger Tea.

You’ll get up from the table feeling slim and trim.

Brain-Power

The brain was created by God more superior than the most advanced computer on the planet. With its multi-functions, the brain is far more advance and capable than man made technology, as advanced as that is. However, we still have to be good stewards of this brilliant organ.

Many people take the brian for granted, and therefore, participate in activities that are not helpful to the brain. In fact, some activities are very harmful to it. For example, marijuana use has an adverse impact on brain development, leading to poorer performance on thinking tasks, says a new study.

The research team led by clinical neuropsychology researcher Krista Lisdahl Medina from University of Cincinnati and Susan Tapert, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego found that chronic, marijuana use during adolescence – a critical period of ongoing brain development – causes many adverse affects. These affects include slower psychomotor speed, poorer complex attention and poorer verbal memory and planning .

In addition, the bible warns against altering our mental state through intoxication. We are, instead encouraged to be filled with the Spirit of God.(Eph. 5:18) This puts us in a place where are minds can be renewed and then we’re transformed. (Ro. 12:2) You can go from being a sad person to a happy person, not because you’ve smoked, but because you’ve soaked…in His presence.

cup_kenyaMA25691401-0003This is the year that we’ve all waited for. Your physical health, state of mind and financial status will all be better this year.  There is a “shift” in the kingdom and we will be affected positively.  According to the bible, “the Kingdoms of this world will become the Kingdoms of our God and and Christ.”  This is what’s happening now.  (Rev. 11:15)    This year,I encourage you to change your perspective; To look at things differently.

This is a new year, made up of a new day. We are in a new era and it is the end of some things and the beginning of others.  We are moving at an accelerated pace.  We have got to keep moving with this increase of speed or velocity.  Expect to feel better, perform better, think better…This year, expect the best to come your way, and expect to walk right into God’s best for you.  Yes, the world will get darker and even more troubled, however this is the time for the Body of Christ to shine, shine, shine more than we did in 2009.  (Pr. 4:18).    Because in 2010 – we win, win win!

It’s Okay to Rest

Author: admin

resting coupleMost people in today’s society do not take the time to enjoy rest.   I believe that more people would enjoy rest if  they realized it as a health benefit.   A restful life is a healthy life.  Even still, most people are not always sure if one should rest at certain times during the day.  We all know that it’s acceptable and expected of one to go to bed at night, however daytime rest is still questionable in the  minds of many people.

First off, in order to begin to happily enjoy rest, one should probably settle within yourself that it’s okay to rest. Babies aren’t the only ones who need a nap during the day.  Keep in mind, though, rest does not always involve sleeping.  One of the number one reasons why people don’t take time out to rest is because they think it makes them appear to be lazy.  Also, rest seems to be non-productive when, in fact, resting is actually very productive.   One aspect of mental health and well-being is simply allowing the mind time to do nothing. It is in this process of not being busy that one is free to contemplate, meditate, recharge and generally appreciate.   Rest puts one in a state of faith where trust and belief is easily attained.  It is no coincidence that the western world is a more stressed and anxious place than it was fifty years ago.  With our cars, traffic jams, motorways and road rage, it’s not very hard to see.   Not to mention working several jobs at once, or overtime that could equal three jobs, some of which may be necessary, but cannot be maintained healthily without taking time to rest.

Rest is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.  Hebrews 4:9-11 are words of encouraging warning that go something like this…“Let us enter into the place of rest and relaxation, as we wait patiently, in faith, for the promises of God to be fulfilled in our lives; Lest we doubt and stop short of the fulfillment of God’s promises to us, as others have in the past.”

veteranAs a Nation, let’s show appreciation to and for our United States Veterans. The first Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, marked the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I, what many proclaimed, with an optimism that turned out to be wildly misplaced, “the war to end all wars.”

It became a U.S. national holiday in 1938 and in 1954 was renamed Veterans Day to honor all veterans. With the end of the draft and the passing of the World War II generation, military service is not the common denominator in American life it once was.

There are currently 23.2 million veterans, down from a peak of 28.6 million in 1980. There is no danger of those numbers dwindling to a point where the nation begins to overlook its veterans. We spend generously on them ― over $84 billion last year, mainly for pensions and medical benefits ― and will continue to do so.

But as the scandalous treatment of the wounded undergoing rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center showed, bureaucracies can move in fits and starts. That’s why it’s encouraging that the Obama administration ― specifically Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki and Defense Secretary Robert Gates ― have undertaken several worthwhile initiatives.

The two pledged to attack the cumbersome and maddeningly complex paperwork needed to process veterans’ disability claims that have created a huge backlog at the VA. And they have doubled the funding for treatment of the side effects of the nature of the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan ― traumatic brain injuries and mental health issues.

Shinseki has also vowed to end veterans’ homelessness in five years. There are an estimated 130,000 homeless vets. That’s down substantially from 195,000 six years ago, but Shinseki doesn’t believe any should be out on the streets. He proposes to attack the problem by preventing veterans from becoming homeless in the first place.

Sunday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order intended to ramp up the federal government’s employment of veterans across its agencies. And Congress has passed a law to make the VA’s funding more secure and predictable.

Help me spread the word….Veterans, We Appreciate You!
